Jen (Jennifer) Jacobs works at Uniting Communities in South Australia, as an Advocate and Senior Practitioner. Margi Charlesworth has worked alongside Jen for 18 months in her role as the Two Way Street Communication Access Consultant.
Jen has been a driving force behind Uniting Communities becoming Communication Accessible. This began in late 2019, when she obtained funding to ensure that the newly opened U-City (a retirement Village, Platinum Accessible apartments, and an accessible hotel in Adelaide) became Communication Accessible.
Jen has a commitment to see the whole of Uniting Communities becomes communication accessible. After receiving training and mentoring from other members of Two Way Street, Jen and Margie were able to deliver Communication Access training to other departments within Uniting Communities.
To date, the following services within Uniting Communities have been awarded with the Communication Access Symbol; U-City Concierge and the Level one reception of the Franklin Street building, the Uniting Communities Law Centre and three Family Relationship Centres in Marion, Aldinga and Christies Beach.
Over the time that Margie has worked with Jen, Margie has witnessed her willingness to broaden her understanding of Communication Access as well as the benefits its implementation has on people living with Complex Communication Needs. Her willingness to see that the whole of Uniting Communities become Communication Accessible can be described as committed and unwavering.
